• One of the antimicrobial factors made by l.reuteri is reuterin that has no peptide or compound proteins and is produced during glycerol fermentation. In fact, reuterin is beta-hydroxypropionaldehyde 3 – HPA derived from glycerol in anerobic conditions and has wide functional effect against gram positive and negative bacteria.it can even affect fungi, yeasts and protozoa.

In a study that was done by Savino, the differences between healthy infants intestinal microflora and infants with colitis were investigated. Investigations has shown that microflora in infants with colitis has less lactic acid bacteria and more anaerobic gram negative bacteria in comparison to non-colic infants. So increasing the lactic acid bacteria in infants with colic will improve the condition. There is complicated relation between immune system and intestinal flora .in animal studies, intestinal cytokines can cause over reaction in neuromuscular system by neuro-immune and masculo-immune reactions.
Chassard et al recent studies have proven that balancing intestinal microflora with lactobacillus reuteri can decrease risk of intestinal infections and allergic diseases by improving microflora. Lactobacillus reuteri colonization in intestine inhibits pathogen. Lactobacillus reuteri antimicrobial activity in the most important factor in prevention and treatment of infections.
Surawicz and Huebner have shown probiotic capability in preventing and treatment of intestinal infections. Cleusix et al have proven that lactobacillus reuteri can inhibit pathogen growth and activity by producing reuterin.
In a study by M.Urbanska, it was concluded that administrating lactobacillus reuteri in infants is safe and it is very important in infants and children health and can improve colitis symptoms, decrease daily crying periods in infants, solve functional digestive problems like constipation and abdominal pain and decrease regurgitation episodes.
In addition in a study done by P.Coccorullo et al on 6-24 month old infants with constipation it was proven that lactobacillus reuteri has positive effects on constipation management in infants. In another study done by Francesco Savino et al on simethicone and lactobacillus reuteri effects on infants with milk induced colitis, the crying period in infants was reduced from 159 minutes to 51 minutes in lactobacillus reuteri and 177 minutes to 145 minutes in simethicone cases that show significant effect of lactobacillus reuteri after 28 days in reducing colic pains and crying periods.
